what is a digital world?
While this piece was originally written and shared within A Home for Creating’s member area, I am now choosing to gently repurpose it for my website universe — here’s why:
Because everything that I have created on the internet has been somewhat of a slow, ever-evolving experiment, I haven’t ever taken the time to think about the why behind some of projects, only that I knew I wanted to try something new, something different to what I had been doing before.
Which got me musing over the idea of: what am I creating and why am I wanting to create it?
Asking myself questions like: from which lens do I view these projects and experiments? What unexpected shapes have they taken? Is it possible to define something that is liminal — something that never reaches completion?
Even my offerings, both physical and digital, have evolved from something forced and controlled, to something much more fluid and in sync with my natural rhythm and pace.
And while I’m all for standing back and seeing where they go, I also am curious to give them a shape to land in, for now. A loosely structured definition that I can return to again and again.
That I can refine and expand and throw away entirely (if I wanted to).
So, here is my attempt at just that…
website universe in relation to a digital world
I think of my website as my digital universe: an ever-expanding container for all of my projects and offerings, and my individual projects and offerings as the digital worlds that are in orbit around my website universe.
My website universe is the public-facing portal — a front door that opens onto various paths and their corresponding digital worlds
Each digital world has its own atmosphere, its own rules of gravity, its own seasons and rhythms and cycles — all of which are connected to my own internal seasons, rhythms, and cycles
Some worlds are meant for collaboration and community, task and project management, or daily systems and operations, while others are sacred spaces for solo exploration and experimentation
An example of my own digital world
A Home for Creating is one of these orbiting worlds, somewhere that can be shaped and reshaped, built and rebuilt, designed and redesigned, expanding and contracting as I move through seasons of outward expression and inward incubation.
It's a living archive of all of my past and current experiments, ideas, interests, emotions, resources, art, writing, findings, and pivots
It's where I can trace the threads between seemingly unrelated interests, and watch patterns emerge over time, letting them grow wild and organically, rather than being constructed all at once
Unlike more traditional portfolios or social media profiles, this digital world holds space for the liminal — the half-formed thoughts and the projects that might never see completion.
Why this digital world? Why now?
It wasn't until I built A Home for Creating that I realized just how disconnected I had become from my creative-self, and just how much I longed for a digital space that fostered a deeper appreciation for being in the process-of, as well as support for more long-term creative exploration.
Somewhere with the capacity to hold every version of me through every season of my creative life.
Without realizing it, building my own digital world had become an act of personal rebellion: reclaiming agency over my creative process and digital presence — my response to feeling fragmented across multiple platforms, each asking that I present a different version of myself.
A digital world is somewhere for
The multi-passionate, non-linear learners and thinkers, practicing witches, healers, mixed-genre readers, students, teachers, artists, writers, and makers of all kinds
Those who love to create and share, but often feel anxious and overwhelmed when creating and sharing on larger social platforms
Anyone looking for a safe place to self-express, take up space, and be themselves on the internet
Those who want to devote themselves to something — to bringing a project to life, giving it shape and substance, then continuing to tend to and build upon just because
Those who have felt boxed in by traditional categories and labels, who resist being reduced to a single niche or identity
Anyone interested in documenting their creative life — not for external validation, but for their own understanding and growth
A digital world can be built on
Whatever digital space you are most comfortable customizing, sharing from, and spending time in — some examples of tools and programs that work well for my brain are: Notion & Anytype
A program, tool, or digital system that is accessible both online and off — a space that can be easily accessed and edited from your devices of choice
Platforms that prioritize flexibility and personal organization over virality and engagement metrics
Somewhere with the tools, systems, and features that feel like extensions of your way of thinking and learning
Spaces that can evolve with you — simplifying, restructuring, or completely transforming as your needs change
My ultimate goal being
I like to imagine a softer, quieter, more intentional internet where our attention is not as fragmented — where we spend more time traveling between and engaging with thoughtfully crafted digital spaces, than we do comparing and telling ourselves we aren’t enough
Where visiting someone's digital world feels like being invited into their studio or creative sanctuary — a privilege and an intimate exchange
Where we can leave meaningful traces of our visits — thoughtful responses, connections made, ideas sparked — rather than just likes and fleeting reactions
Where we reimagine the internet as a constellation of personal worlds
Where we build sustainability and spaciousness into how we show up online
Where we reclaim the early internet's promise of genuine connection and creative freedom, but with the wisdom and tools we have now
